From the black-and-white cover photo to the carefully chosen songs, Signe Hensel’s debut CD shimmers with nostalgia.
“Invitation” is an impressive introduction to the newcomer.
Emerging from the Minneapolis music scene, Hensel...can be seen in jazz clubs around the Twin Cities.
She has a strong, clear voice that works well in both the higher and lower registers. She wraps that voice around an unexpected set of songs. Rather than picking the usual standards, she’s chosen several lesser-known, yet still impressive, songs, adding to the ambience of “Invitation.”
The CD offers a mix of sultry ballads and swinging Big Band numbers that allow Hensel to show her range. She even gets to be a little sassy. She throws in some playful touches on “Deed I Do.” And, on “Do Me Good Baby,” she leaps into a lively exchange with the other musicians... If you are looking for a new female vocalist to listen to, seek out Hensel’s “Invitation.”
....Jazz Review
Minneapolis singer Signe Hensel has a beautiful and clear voice. The tunes she selected for her debut CD Invitation (which she also co-produced) are reflective of her artistic strengths. Hensel conveys the full palette of "up and down emotions" with warm timbre and appropriate phrasing - thereby using all facets of her naturally wide vocal range, and choosing a consistently sensitive interpretation of the lyrics on hand. I like her straightforward delivery: no scatting, no drawn out vibrato that could distract from her outstanding voice qualities. Just Signe pure....A well-rounded first album from a singer we definitely will hear from again.
